U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal joined advocates Thursday at the Hartford Farmer’s Market to urge support for the Genetically Engineered Food Right-To-Know Act.

The legislation, which was introduced in February, would require the Food and Drug Administration to clearly label genetically engineered foods “so that consumers can make informed choices about what they eat,” Blumenthal said.

Last month, the U.S. House passed H.R. 1599, which has been dubbed the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act by its opponents. It passed the House by a vote of 275 to 150.

Breaking: Report finds cancer deaths have doubled in Argentina's GMO growing regions

A new report by the Ministry of Health in Cordoba, Argentina, has documented a disturbing trend for those who live in areas where pesticide-intensive GM crops are grown -- specifically, a dramatic spike in cancer deaths.

The report covered five years of collected data. The average cancer deaths in the province is 158 per 100,000 individuals. And yet, four of the "Pampa Gringa" districts have much higher death rates -- between 216 and 230. "Pampa Gringa" is considered the premier agricultural region of the Cordoba province.

The Report on Cancer in Cordoba 2004-2009 is the official investigation which links the use of pesticides -- especially glyphosate -- to the staggering increase in cancer deaths.

12 ways to rid the planet of GMOs and Monsanto’s Roundup

(Eat Local Grown) It is now blatantly obvious that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are nothing more than patented Pesticide Delivery Systems (PDS) designed to increase sales of poisonous agrochemicals such as Roundup, glufosinate, Bt, 2,4 D and neonicotinoids. GMOs encourage weight gain and obesity, researchers discover

Looking around, it's no secret that Americans are putting on the pounds unlike any other time in history. Sure, we can't discount sedentary lifestyles, processed foods and outrageous sugar consumption as contributing factors. At the same time, an elephant in the room is often overlooked -- one known as genetically modified food. Researches are beginning to connect the dots, realizing that the possibility of GMOs contributing to weight gain is not as far-fetched as once thought.

GMOs: respected analyst says they could destroy life on the planet

(Alliance for Natural Health) Nassim Nicholas Taleb is a scholar, statistician, Wall Street analyst and advisor, professor at New York University, and the bestselling author of Fooled by Randomness  and The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. He predicted the 2008 financial crisis by pointing out that commonly used risk models were wrong. (He was correct, and he became quite wealthy from the strategic financial decisions he made at that time.)

Now his analysis of our use of genetically modified organisms shows that GMOs could cause “an irreversible termination of life at some scale, which could be the planet.” Taleb and his two co-authors argue that calling the GMO approach “scientific” betrays “a very poor—indeed warped—understanding of probabilistic payoffs and risk management.”

Taleb believes GMOs fall squarely under the rule that we should always err on the side of caution if something is really dangerous. This is not just because of potential harm to the consumer, but because of systemic risk to the system, which in this case is the ecosystem that supports all life on the planet:

Your right to know what's in our food is under attack—again

The Grocery Manufacturers Association, along with allies like Monsanto and Dow, have teamed up with Koch-backed Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas on a federal bill that would deny your right to know what is in your food.

This bill, (HR 4432), which has been called the “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know Act” (DARK Act), would:

- Prevent states from adopting their own GE labeling laws.

- Block states from making it illegal to put a “natural” label on products that contain GE ingredients.

The “Right to Know” whether our food is genetically modified is something that’s not afforded to us in America, despite the fact that labels on foods containing GMOs are mandated in 60+ countries around the world.

And while companies have begun voluntarily labeling them, there is much concern over whether they’re telling the truth (as this recent fiasco involving a popular tortilla chip company showed).

This November, voters in two key states, Colorado and Oregon, will decide whether or not to label GMOs in landmark votes.

Both campaigns are being badly outspent due to huge donations from Monsanto and Big Food, but Colorado in particular is getting hammered, with over $11 million spent to hide information from consumers about whether or not there are GMOs in their food so far, compared with just $441,000 on the pro-labeling side.

Effective Immediately: France Bans All GMO Cultivation

The French National Assembly has made a sweeping declaration with a new bill, effective immediately. No more genetically modified crops.

On Tuesday, the French lower house of parliament adopted a law immediately banning cultivation of any GMO corn, due to environmental safety concerns.

Recently, they also made a halt decree to prohibit planting the only GM crop allowed in the EU - Monsanto's MON810 corn, with built-in insect resistance.

Latest research - Scientists discover correlation between GMOs and leukemia

As if there isn't enough reason to avoid genetically modified food, new research has discovered GMOs are linked with leukemia and anemia. The study found that Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) used in bioengineered seeds has a substantial adverse effect on blood cells and bone marrow cell proliferation. Even at the lowest dose, the effects were deemed virulent to proper cell health.
