Struggling To Feel Well, No Matter What You Do? Try These 3 Simple Steps

(Contributed Post)

When it comes to wellness, it’s important to realize that it is a journey, not a destination. Not even wellness coaches, personal trainers, nutritionists or celebrities “arrive” at wellness — it is a constant search, a continuing journey towards finding the best lifestyle.

For many people, the search for wellness is truly frustrating — to the point where many have given up trying to feel or be well. There are many fads, misleading diets, intense exercise regimes or quick-fix plans that promise better things for a person, and rarely deliver on that promise.

In this post, we will take a look at how you can truly feel better by exploring holistic, realistic ways of moving towards wellness.

Let’s get started!

Slowly alter your toxic habits

If you are searching for ways to make changes to your lifestyle, radical choices is not a sustainable solution. While taking it slowly can be frustrating, gradually shifting your toxic habits is the best in the long run.

Whether these toxic habits deal with your relationships, your food and diet intake, your exercise or perhaps your social life, it is important to alter them slowly.

For example, if you are trying to reduce the intake of processed foods in your diet, you can start by eliminating just one snack or limiting your calories by 100-200 per week, and build upon it slowly. That way, you will be less likely to snap and binge on the foods you’re eliminating.

Don’t make changes alone

Making big life changes by yourself can be very challenging. If you feel weak and want to return to your old habits, it is easier to revert back to old ways if you don’t have any support in your wellness journey.

That’s why it is important to involve others in your life in this process. While it can be difficult to be vulnerable in front of others, a group wellness program or therapy appointment can help you open up with a support network around you.

Forgive yourself for past mistakes

One of the areas that often inhibits positive change is remaining in an old mindset, or having ongoing regret over past actions. While it is totally understandable to feel down about past mistakes, staying angry with yourself will only prevent you from changing those behaviors.

That’s why forgiving yourself for past mistakes is so important. While it is not easy, through self reflection, positive habits and mutual support with friends, family and colleagues, you can gradually move towards wellness through self forgiveness.

Final Thoughts

If you are struggling to feel well no matter what you do, it’s time to try a different approach. Remember: wellness is not something that is ever fully achieved. Instead, it is a lifelong journey, one that is well worth the effort!

How Being More Expressive Leads To a Happier Life

(Contributed Post)

One of the secrets to living a happy and fulfilling life is to be more expressive. And a number of studies prove it. For example, did you know that smiling makes you happier? There’s plenty of science and research around happiness.

Whereas repressing your feelings and bottling up negative emotions can lead to the opposite. Not being able to express yourself will make you feel like you cannot be yourself. It makes it difficult for you to express your emotions and it feels like you have no opportunities to be the “real” you.

Being more expressive with your life choices

A reliable approach to living a happier life is to become more expressive with your lifestyle choices. Spontaneity, participating in activities that bring happiness, and not caring what other people think are all excellent ways to be more expressive.

This can come from almost anything. It could be the jewelry you choose to wear, the fashion choices you make, the way you speak, or even the hobbies that you love. Whether it’s looking for the best body jewelry for any style or finding new friends that enjoy the same hobbies as you do, it’s important to encourage the things that you find fun and enjoyable in life. This helps you become more expressive and unique and ultimately makes you a happier person.

Radiating positivity builds a happy atmosphere around you

It’s common for happy people to radiate the same positivity and infect others with their joy. Typically, happy people have an uncanny power to lift the spirits of the those around them. Whether it’s doing something to make you laugh, giving thoughtful gifts, or just finding the right words to encourage you, their infectious personalities make you smile.

These expressive and joyous people are great to be around because they have so much positive energy–enough to share with everyone! This is a great example of how positive and expressive people tend to live happier and more fulfilled lives.

Overcoming negativity with a positive approach to life

Psychologists have suggested that negativity tends to seep into every area of life. For example, a gloomy person might hide their emotions, and this can cause their interactions with people to be negative. This could also lead to actions that are harmful, or they might always interpret situations with a negative approach.

By being more expressive, true to your emotions, and overall more positive, you’ll find yourself embracing a life full of possibilities that helps you move beyond any negative experiences that you’ve encountered in the past.

It's A Pain In The Neck! 10 Causes and Treatments

(Guest Post)

It is estimated that neck pain is one of the most frequent complaints, alongside headache, knee pain, and lower back pain. Almost one-third of the adult American population report experiencing neck discomfort on an annual basis. Most people are familiar with the unpleasant feeling of waking up with a stiff neck from time to time. Yet, the discomfort doesn’t materialize itself in soreness only. Neck pain can be debilitating as it interferes with many of our day-to-day activities. It affects driving, working, and even interacting with other people. Worryingly, half of the adults who experience neck issues can develop some form of chronic pain.

This takes us to one important question, namely: where does neck pain come from? The majority of individuals can pinpoint the cause of their discomfort to a muscular or mobility mishap. Those who frequent gyms are familiar with neck pain when they exercise the muscles in the neck and shoulder areas, for instance. The soreness will disappear once the muscles have healed completely. The second case of neck pain is linked to making a “wrong movement”. It’s typically a sudden move, such as cranking your head violently to one side. The neck area requires rest to recover. The reason why most people can identify these two common causes for neck pain is that they can witness the pain settle in as it happens. To be in control of your pain, you need to understand where it comes from. That’s precisely where it can be helpful to learn more about some of the most common causes of neck pain.

#1. Mitochondrial myopathy

The mitochondria are the energy factory inside your cells. They produce the energy the cell requires to carry out its functions and survive. Simply put, mitochondria break down glucose into fuel (adenosine triphosphate or ATP) through chemical reactions. Mitochondrial diseases target the production of energy at a cellular level. When the defective mitochondria lead to muscular problems, doctors talk about mitochondrial myopathy. These could come in a variety of shapes and levels. No all myopathies lead to debilitating results. Yet, they all cause weaknesses in the muscle tissues. People with mild defect mitochondria can experience weaknesses in some specific muscle areas, such as the legs, the arms, or the neck. You will also struggle to maintain a fitness routine as myopathies contribute to physical exertion.

#2. Curved spine

Scoliosis is one of the most common conditions that tend to develop among children and growing teenagers. However, it can also be found in adults as the result of long-term degenerative conditions. To put it simply, there is more than one type of scoliosis. It occurs when a portion of the spine curves sideways. Individuals can develop scoliosis at different levels along the spine; it is important to learn more about the condition. When scoliosis is prominent, you can spot uneven shoulders, waist, and hips with a naked eye. However, individuals who develop only mild cases may not be able to see any physical manifestation of scoliosis. This can happen because your body tries to compensate for the spinal curve. As a result, you can experience back or neck pain even though the curvature isn’t apparent in the mirror. A professional can help diagnose and treat the condition.

#3. Chronic stress

Whether it’s the pressure at work or being stuck in a complex situation in your day-to-day life, long-lasting stress has physical consequences. Chronic stress takes its toll on the body and can lead to severe muscle tension and rigidity. Unfortunately, chronic stress is a permanent sensation that can last for several days, weeks, or even months. This makes it hard in the long-term to realize that you are suffering from stress. Tenses muscle neck can’t relax, which leads to sharp pain and limited mobility. There isn’t much of a solution for it, unfortunately. Muscle tensions will remain a problem for as long as you fail to acknowledge the underlying mental health issues.

#4. Sleeping posture

Waking up with a sore neck is wrongly blamed on a bad mattress. In reality, it’s not uncommon for individuals to buy high-quality bedding solutions and still experience neck pain in the morning. The issue has a lot to do with the way you sleep. Indeed there are different sleeping postures, which need specific pillow shapes and support. Sleeping with the wrong pillow for your posture could contribute to pain and stiffness. So it’s important to select the right support whether you are a back, side, or stomach sleeper.

#5. Screen height

If you’ve seized the opportunity to work from home during the pandemic, you might want to reconsider your home office arrangement. Indeed, a lot of Americans have created an improvised workstation at home, working from the bed or the sofa. It’s important to keep the screen at eye level to avoid unnecessary neck pain. You can’t safely work on a screen for long working hours with your neck bent forward. Unfortunately, when you are focused on work, you may not notice that the position is uncomfortable.

#6. Inflammation

Nobody likes to talk about joint pain as the inflammatory condition tends to be associated with old age. However, lack of hydration and an unhealthy diet can contribute to the early onset of joint pain. Thankfully, more often than not, the condition is reversible and manageable in its early stages with simple lifestyle changes. As the neck is made up of vertebrae separated by discs, the movements are controlled by a system of muscles and tendons that surround the spine. The joints, aka the connective tissues between the muscle and the spine, are the first to show signs of tear and wear if your diet lacks antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and water.

#7. Disc degeneration

The disks between the vertebrae act as shock absorbers. As we age, the discs can become thinner and more fragile as part of a natural degenerative process. While the process is not a fatality, it is a frequent occurrence. Minor injuries are some of the most common causes of degeneration. Over time, injuries contribute to the wear and tear of discs, which lose their shock-absorbing properties. Treatment varies, ranging from medication, non-surgical treatments, and even operations depending on the situation.

#8. Uncoordinated vocal cords

Doctors talk about laryngeal muscle tension disorders to describe a situation in which a patient experiences vocal problems and sometimes combined with breathing problems. Indeed, speaking requires the coordination of many muscles inside your neck. When these muscles lose coordination or contract inappropriately, this can lead to a variety of consequences. It can affect your voice, causing a hoarse sound as you speak. In extreme cases, a patient can also lose their voice completely. As the problem is muscular, it also leads to neck pain and neck fatigue.

#9. Swollen thyroid glands

The thyroid glands can become painful after you’ve suffered an infection. However, the reaction can occur several weeks after the infection, which can make it tricky for individuals to self-diagnose. Typically, you will notice some swelling in the area above where your collar bones meet. However, in some cases, the swelling isn’t apparent so you can’t locate the source of the pain.

#10. Food poisoning

Every year, 48 million American's experience food poisoning. More often than not, people recover without medical treatment. Typically, you would experience nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. However, extreme cases can also cause neck stiffness and respiratory distress. If you experience these symptoms, you need to seek medical assistance immediately.

Your neck pain can be triggered from a variety of causes. Since it is a common complaint, it's important to uncover the root cause. Acting rapidly can ensure the issue is corrected early on to prevent chronic pain from developing.

Healthy Aging: Top Habits to Adopt Now

(Guest Post)

As you age, you may notice a few health issues crop up here and there. It could be something as simple as not being as active, or it could be more serious issues or illnesses that have developed later in life. Regardless of your age, whether you're 24 or 85, it's critical to take care of your body. Here are several areas to keep watch over.

Heart

The most common causes of heart failure include obesity, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and consuming junk food. While a drink once in a while is fine, and the occasional pizza isn't going to hurt you, you should be cautious about what you put into your body to protect your heart. Also, make sure you exercise regularly to keep your heart strong.

Ears

It's completely normal for your hearing to deteriorate as you get older. However, ear problems may have a significant impact on your hearing as you get older. Have your hearing checked on a regular basis to keep your ears in good shape, whether it's for something as simple as tinnitus treatment or something more serious like hearing loss. Speak to your GP if you’re worried about any aspect of your hearing.

Eyes

As people age, it's not unusual to lose some vision. However, how you treat your eyes earlier in life can have an impact later in life. Wearing glasses has become much more acceptable in recent years, and even if your eyes have never had any problems, it's important to visit an optician on a regular basis to have your vision checked.

Mind

Dementia is often hereditary and cannot be prevented. Trauma to the head can also cause dementia. Poor mental health, on the other hand, can be a significant factor later in life. It's inevitable that life is going to be difficult at times, so you should take steps to protect your mental health. Take time for yourself, and resolve stressful situations as quickly as possible.

Teeth

Finally, it's not unusual to see elderly people with missing teeth. However, with today's medicine and oral hygiene studies, tooth loss is entirely avoidable. Brush and floss your teeth every day, and avoid sugary foods to keep your teeth healthy. Visiting the dentist twice a year will also help you maintain your best smile.

There are, of course, many other aspects to watch for as you age, but addressing these common problem areas will help to lay a solid foundation of health.

The 8 Secrets Happy and Fulfilled Women Practice Everyday

Finding stability and happiness is one of the many challenges we face as modern women. Oftentimes, there are more stressors today for women as there are growth opportunities. If we are not worried about career and family, then there's a good chance we are concerned about our other relationships or feel a sense of low self-esteem.

The result can be a life where women do not believe in their ability or worth. In these modern times, it requires strength and strong character to seize what life has to offer. If we are not careful, life can be an exhausting and soul-sapping affair.

But it doesn't have to be this way. We can take active steps to find happiness and serenity in our chaotic world. Here's how.

Avoid Negativity

Negativity destroys dreams, plain and simple. If you want to live a full and joyful life, avoid negativity at all costs. Begin by acknowledging that there is room for improvement and growth if we are committed to actively pursuing it. Many times this requires that we limit our time around negative people. If friends or family members are consistently voicing their negativity, it may be time to sever the relationship if they are unwilling to change. As Hans F. Hansen said, “People inspire you, or they drain you – pick them wisely.”

The Power of Forgiveness

Truly forgiving another is a powerful practice. While not an easy task by any means, true forgiveness will help you to move forward and live your best life. Be patient and know that healing can take time before you feel whole again. One way to explore forgiveness is to write a letter to the person you feel has harmed you. Include all your thoughts and feelings about the situation. Sign it. Then tear up the letter. Abraham Lincoln used this method throughout his life—and it worked.

You can also establish new networks of like-minded people for support and a sense of community. Reading inspiring books, magazines, and articles is helpful too.

Set Realistic Goals

Consider if the frustrations you are experiencing in life might be the result of unrealistic goals. Examine your strengths and weaknesses, then create a manageable plan for achieving your dreams and aspirations. As you do this, work with short-term achievable goals and then progress to more complex actions. The short-term goals will help you stay on track and keep you motivated. Don't forget to take the time to enjoy your success milestones with small rewards.

Ask for Help

Sometimes it is difficult to juggle career, family, and personal life in our modern, busy lives. This is why it's important to ask for help. When we are overloaded with responsibilities, it is difficult for us to manage our projects and goals with efficiency and grace. Consider hiring an assistant to help with scheduling, email, and other work-related responsibilities. A personal assistant can also ease the stress of house management. If hiring someone is beyond your budget, connect with friends and other mothers in your community to share childcare, meal prep, and shopping. It will help everyone to reduce their household workload and overall stress.

Take Time for Yourself

A little pampering and self-care can go a long way in helping you to feel a renewed sense of enthusiasm. When you wear your favorite dress, easily style a French bob, and carefully apply your make up, you are able to be in touch with your femininity and soften your outlook. This is one method of self-care.

Alternately, we can simply take time for ourselves, curl up with a good book or meet a dear friend for coffee. Spending time in nature is another way we can care for ourselves. These small investments in your well-being can be life-changing, helping you to have a bright and positive outlook.

Gratitude

It is well-known that comparison is the destroyer of happiness. Instead of envying the seemingly charmed life of a close friend or colleague, recognize your own value and all the blessings in your life. A gratitude journal is a terrific place to start. Take time each day to acknowledge the good in your life, whether it's a bright, sunny morning or that your husband brought you a steaming cup of coffee. Notice the little things and, before long, you will have transformed your outlook. The more gratitude you have and express, the more happiness you will experience. Don't wait to begin this simple practice!

Challenge Yourself

Today’s world is competitive and offers a wealth of opportunities for those willing to take the initiative. Side hustles are generating six-figure incomes. Home businesses are exploding. And successful start-ups are now a common reality for many.

With the Internet it is easier now more than ever to start a new business, learn a new trade, or increase knowledge in your area of expertise. Online courses are widely available from a range of universities and institutions, and many times are offered free or for a very low cost. Have a look at Coursera or EdX for courses from highly-regarded institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford.

Learn to Love Exercise

If you are ready to feel beautiful, strong, and energetic, exercise is crucial. Being active will not only help you stay fit and alert, but it will also keep stress at bay and help you to live longer. It also can help you to develop social networks at the gym, while hiking, or when you're out and about on a walk. Exercise also keeps your weight within a healthy range and reduces your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more.

In closing, it's important to recognize that everyone deserves to live a happy and fulfilled life. By taking action with these suggestions, you can lower stress while increasing joy, happiness, and health.
