In contrast, long-term consumption of a protein-poor diet produced heightened GABA activity and stronger immunity. The findings were published in the journal Neuroscience.

Additionally, L-theanine has been shown to boost GABA and encourage a state of relaxed mental alertness - along with reduced anxiety. The amino acid is found in both green and black tea, as well as in concentrated supplemental form. And inositol helps to alleviate depression and anxiety by enhancing the ability of GABA to bind to receptors within the brain. Another nutrient which activates GABA receptors is magnesium. Lastly, Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) and taurine assist the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase convert glutamate from the diet into GABA.
Lifestyle habits are important too. Stress reducing practices - such as exercise, yoga, acupuncture and meditation - have all been shown to support healthy GABA levels as well.
